About Nina Shilling, Berkeley Therapist

Nina received her Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Lone Mountain College in 1974 and has been licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist since 1975.  In addition to her private therapy practice, she has worked in the community, teaching communication skills to individuals, couples and groups from New York City to the Bay Area.

In her work Nina is known for her integrity, warmth and down to earth style.  She uses the trust and respect that she feels for her clients to encourage them to trust and respect themselves.

Nina’s approach to therapy is both active and collaborative.  She has extensive training and experience in guiding clients safely into a renewed and fuller discovery of who they are so they can fulfill their creative potential.  She always responds to the inner wisdom that she sees in her clients and works with them to help bring about the changes that they yearn for in their lives.

In working with individuals, Nina takes her cues from her clients' most important needs and draws on a wide variety of approaches to suit the particular challenges of each person that she works with.*   Nina helps couples to rediscover what it is that brought them together and to clear the air of resentment, negative feelings, and hurtful exchanges.  She shows them how to express their needs and feelings directly and without defensiveness and to listen to their partners with openness and confidence.   She will often brainstorm with them on how to reconnect with the activities and exchanges that fueled their connection in the past, and to discover new ones as well.

Nina has been practicing Buddhist meditation for over fifteen years and in the last six years has been teaching individuals and groups how to develop a meditation or spiritual practice that they can make their own.  She collaborates with interested clients to develop a meditation practice that suits their particular lives and personal needs.  She is sensitive to their changes during therapy and always works with them, to tailor their meditation practice to suit their developing lives.

* Nina’s background includes experience in short-term solution-focused therapy, cognitive work, sub-personality exploration, insights from the Diamond Heart approach, transpersonal inquiry, helping clients locate their own higher guidance,  psychodynamic work, Tarot card reading, and Buddhist approaches to mindfulness and peace.  She also does narrative therapy and creatively-based therapy, which can include journaling, writing, art, or dramatic play.

She welcomes you to get in touch with her for a free 30-minute phone or office consultation if you are interested in seeing whether her personality and approach are a good fit for you and what you need. You can contact her at (510)540-0813,ninashilling@msn.com, or by clicking here.
